Chase, Alston
In A Dark Wood : The Fight Over Forests and the Rising Tyranny of Ecology

A history of the "forest wars" of the Pacific Northwest U.S., this volume goes to the philosophical and scientific heart of current struggles over ecology and ecosystems. Chase explains how the environmentalist ideology inherited from 19th-century Germany was put into action as it guided the spotted owl economic shutdown disaster in the Pacific Northwest. It opens with the statement: "Most environmental - and antienvironmental - stories are moral tracts that depict life as a struggle between the forces of good and evil. But In A Dark Wood does not fit this form. It is a tale without heroes or villains, in which the bad guy isn't a person at all but an idea." A deep and compelling study. Paperback, 545 pages, $21.95. Jordan, Richard N.
Trees and People: Forestland Ecosystems and Our Future
In his admiration and advocacy of the managed landscapes of the Bavarian Black Forest, with roads criss-crossing every 400 meters, as a welcome alternative to protected wilderness areas, Jordan affirms his belief that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Although expressing a desire to find common ground between lumbermen and environmentalists, his twin motifs are the merits of the "forest products industry" and the mendacity of "antiforestry advocates" (Sierra Club et al.). Jordan proposes the development of an information center for the training of ambassadors to clean up the image of the timber industry and for educating the public on the benefits of "ecosystem management." A portion of the book comprises an abbreviated history of national forest legislation and thumbnail biographies of timber association leaders. Although Jordan offers shining examples of the utility of forestland stewardship, those wishing a balanced presentation of the issues must look elsewhere. (Review by Brenda Grazis for Booklist.)
